Editorial Review for Astor Place Hair – by Daniella Brodsky
The Scene
A village legend, this no-frills, family-owned hair salon hasn't spent a penny on advertising--or, apparently, on interior design upgrades--since opening its doors. What Astor does have is a massive reputation for inexpensive, quality service on a walk-in basis. It's also a gigantic melting pot, where teens, celebs, Wall Street execs and soon-to-be punk NYU freshman unite in the common goal of good hair. Three levels house eclectic stylist stations and the most large-scale collage of coiffed images you've ever seen, featuring celebs who've enjoyed Astor 'dos.
The Services
Eighty-eight stylists specialize in everything from fades, etchings, color (punk to traditional) and curly styles to hair extensions, weaves and braiding. Way before it was trendy, Astor offered dry cuts for those looking to save time and money. Hot towel shaves, manicures and eyebrow and lip waxing are also available at excellent prices.

So I have been looking for an affordable hair stylist in Manhattan. I was leery of coming to Astor Hair. Its an old, grimy, barbershop with nearly a hundred stations with stylists running around. I called to book an appointment with Rita since she has so many recommendations on this site. She fit me in a few days later. I got there and met her assistant, Iris, who was very nice and washed my hair. She was backed up so I waited about half an hour while she cut 3 people's hair before mine. It didn't take long and her and Iris were both communicating about the wait. I would recommend bringing a book. When it was my turn she was attentive and talked about what would work for me. I'm very happy with the cut and would come back again since it was so affordable ($40 for the wash, cut and style). I would recommend her again.
Pros: Quick, Affordable
Cons: crazy atomosphere, old and not kept up.

I have now been going to Astor Place regularly for quite a while now because I happen to think the best stylist in the Manhattan works there. Her name is Rita and she is wonderful. I am so happy to have found her! Her haircuts are trendy, yet completely original. Her color and highlights are to die for. In fact, I would call her an EXPERT colorist. Her highlights are life changing. She is also sweet and funny and makes you feel really good about yourself. I have easily sent 3 or 4 friends her way and they all think Rita is just unbelievable. I want to tell everyone I know just how great and cool she is! Let's face it, great hair is everything and Rita will give you the look you want for any situation. If you are going to give Astor Place a try for the first time, make sure you ask for her cause she is most definitely the best out there!
